After 40 years of apartheid rule, the newly-elected democratic government of South Africa set up the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to consider amnesty pleas for those who committed crimes under the apartheid regime. Frances Reid and Deborah Hoffmann take viewers into the hearings where murderers meet the surviving family members of their victims in four cases: The Amy Biehl Story, The Cradock 4, the Magoo's Bar Bombing and The Guguletu 7. The filmmakers show the attempts to balance justice and forgiveness comprising the TRC's efforts.
