HUMAN RIGHTS NIGHTS FILM FESTIVAL
Bologna, Italy
HUMAN RIGHTS NIGHTS FILM FESTIVAL presents transcultural cinematic expressions on the theme of human rights and represents film-makers who specifically use their camera as a tool for 'visual resistance' towards a better world. The Festival exists and has flourished in a spirit of community collaboration. Started in 2001 as a small event promoted by the Centre for Constitutional Studies and Democratic Development (Johns Hopkins University / University of Bologna, Faculty of Law) and the Bologna Film Archive / Cineteca di Bologna, the festival has over the years grown in size, scope and stature. HRNFF is currently supported by a wide partnership within the city which includes public institutions, universities, foundations, NGOs and trade unions.
Films are selected for their ability to document reality, in particular the violations of human rights, with investigative scruples, bravery and independent judgement. All formats and lengths are screened: short, medium and feature, fiction and documentaries, mise en scne and animation, dgital, 16 and 35mm.
The films presented are works able to tear away the veil of indifference and opportunism that often surrounds violence and abuse and that effectively represent and denounce - beyond any rhetoric - the most cruel cases of the modern form of barbarism that is the negation of human rights. The Festival is a recognition of the courage, vision and integrity of individuals and groups who are often required to put themselves at great risk to document the injustice and suffering of others.
