Human Rights Nights will be this year opened (Cinema Lumire: Sala 2 - Louis) by the film Khamosh Pani: Silent Waters by Sabiha Sumar (Pakistan-Francia-Germania, 2003), winner of Golden Pardo at Locarno Film Festival 2003 - stories of life in a Punjabi village, in between religious fundamentalism and ethnic conflicts.

The Festival is centred around Abuses and Massacres, elaborating these themes through the stories of youths in war, on the street, and in slavery, and through the survival of women who have been through the trials of poverty and of discrimination. The films examine the absurdity of genocides and mass murders in general, in Rwanda and Cambodia, and also in Haiti and in Burma, or for the 'clandestine' activity along the coasts of Europe. Additionally, some of the films investigate the life threats in Nations such as Chile, the United States, Czechnia, and Iran.
